Marvelous Mir takes Motul to MotoGP crown

Joan Mir’s sensational 7th place in Sunday’s Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, the penultimate round of the 2020 MotoGP™ Championship, was all that was needed to wrap up the much sought-after Triple Crown of world championship titles.

The 23-year-old Spaniard claimed his first championship for riders since his 2017 Moto3 crown, while the Motul-supported Suzuki factory team picked up the Team and Constructors championships – the first for Suzuki in 20 years and in their 100th anniversary year. Everyone at Motul extends their warmest and sincerest congratulations to the whole team, both in Europe and in Japan, for this great achievement.

Mir, who has had a marvelous season has been pushed hard throughout the 2020 season by Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo and Team Suzuki teammate Alex Rins.  However, the 171 points lead he now holds in the classifications puts the title firmly in his hands, even with the final round of the season in Portugal still to run. Mir follows in the legendary footsteps of Suzuki Grand Prix World Champions Kevin Schwantz (1993) and Kenny Roberts (2000) and one of the key things they have in common is the full technology support received by Motul which has helped them and Suzuki on their way to victory.

In the prestigious Constructors Championship, standings were even closer ahead of the Motul-sponsored race in Valencia.  A margin of 29 points separate Suzuki and Yamaha, giving the Japanese manufacturer – with whom Motul has had a long and extremely successful partnership – a richly deserved Triple Crown.

Competing at the highest levels within the biking world, in MotoGP, 100% mechanical reliability and superior performance must be guaranteed. One of the great strengths of the long-term, symbiotic working relationship between Motul and Suzuki, which started 31 years ago, is that Team Suzuki’s GSX-RR bikes benefit from a tailor-made exclusive lubricant which responds perfectly to the extreme conditions seen at the pinnacle of two-wheeled competition.  Other products from the Motul’s racing-dedicated Factory Line range, the 300V also used by SERT (Suzuki Endurance Racing Team) in the FIM Endurance World Championship.  It has truly been a vintage year for Suzuki and Motul with two world championship titles to be celebrated.

Of course the only way in which the perfect season could be improved on would be to take another victory in the final race of the year…with MotoGP being notoriously unpredictable – especially in 2020 – everyone will be watching to see the outcome of the season finale!

Nicolas ZAUGG, Motul Chief Value Officer: “congratulations to all Suzuki team members and partners for this spectacular season. Happy 100th Anniversary Suzuki, this title celebrates a century of innovation, courage and so many successes! All the Motul team is very proud of your title, as much as being part of your history“
