ROBB HOLLAND: “MOTUL MAKES PERFECT PRODUCTS FOR A MUSCLE CAR”

18.03.2021

Robb Holland has been racing all over the world for years, whether it’s behind the wheel of a touring car, a GT-3 car, or a custom-built Corvette on Pikes Peak. This year, however, he’s back racing in the US driving the “Motul Mustang” in SRO’s GT America Series. We caught up with him after a successful weekend in Sonoma!

ROBB HOLLAND: “MOTUL MAKES PERFECT PRODUCTS FOR A MUSCLE CAR”

Robb, first of all, congratulations on a victory during your first outing in the Mustang. Tell us more about the project.

After racing overseas with Rotek for so many years I really wanted to return to American racing and the GT American Series seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. As I always like to do things a little differently, we specifically chose the Mustang GT4 as it was the only American GT4 car available on the market today. Things turned out really well during the first weekend.

What made you gravitate towards a GT4 sprint series?

I’ve been racing GT3s and “high aero” cars for a very long time now. I wanted something different this year and GT4 cars rely on mechanical grip instead of aerodynamics. This makes for closer racing. On top of that, they’re just a lot more fun to drive as they let you slide it around a lot more. Although I love endurance racing a lot, I wanted to do this sprint series as it’s just me in the car. There is no need to find a compromise in set-up for different drivers. The racing is also a lot different. There is way less strategy involved. It’s just “go out and try and be the fastest”. I really love that way of racing.

You’ve raced a lot in both US and Europe. What’s the biggest difference when it comes to motorsport?

When it comes to GT racing both parts of the world have equally very fast and talented drivers. In Europe the number of talented drivers is spread a lot wider. If you have a qualifying grid in the US versus one in Europe, in the US the best five drivers would occupy the top five. While in Europe the professional drivers would be occupying the top 10 or maybe even 15.

How deep is the partnership with Motul when it comes to your Mustang? The brand has quite the presence on the car.

Yes, absolutely! First of all, I’ve been using Motul since the first moment I went racing. Before we partnered up, we were buying it. Every liquid in the Mustang apart from the fuel is Motul. That’s just how we like it. On top of that, there is a specific story to the reason Motul USA decided to go all out on our car and that’s because it’s a Mustang. In the US muscle car scene, Motul is often thought of as an expensive lubricant from Europe that’s not suitable for a big V8. In truth, it’s quite the opposite. Motul makes the perfect product for big V8s and we want to prove this in our Mustang.
