ROMAN MIAH: EXTREMELY SKILLED IN DRAWING SPORTSCARS BY HAND

20.12.2018

Roman Miah, only 27, has been drawing sportscars by hand as if they were photoshopped on a computer. He started drawing as a kid and never stopped doing so. His extreme skills led to his own web shop, an automotive design study and a first assignment for the Porsche factory. Meet the master.

This kind of drawing and design talent hasn’t grown overnight, what’s your background story? ?

I’ve been drawing since I was very young, about the age of 4 years old. It’s something that fascinated me, and I always loved it. I was mainly drawing my favourite cartoons, as I watched these series on TV. It was only back in college I started to get interested in automotive art. Sketching little cars and all details… Everybody loves supercars, so they drew my attention first, as well as the exotic cars found in videogames. At the age of 17 I discovered I wanted to become an automotive designer and started my journey to pursue this as a career.

So that’s about 10 years of drawing cars now?

Yes indeed. Time-lapse videos of artwork on YouTube served as my source of inspiration back then. I learned it myself mostly by trial and error. I followed an artistic education, but what I do today, is not something I learned in class during these courses. I guess that 90% of my skills today, are self-taught. In school they teach you techniques, but making top notch work boils down to practicing, over and over again...

You grew older and left College, what happened afterwards?

After a short break, I returned to education and I am currently studying Automotive Design at the University of Coventry, on my third year now. My final ambition is to become a car designer, but at the same time continue creating ‘Car art’.

Do you also sell your work online?

Yes, I released a ‘making of video’ on YouTube and started my Instagram account and corresponding online web shop. After a while my group of followers grew and so did the interest, and I received the first inquiries. From then on, business really took off and I started selling online. Right now, I receive mainly custom orders from customers, creating original artwork upon request. Some of the artworks are printed and sold in unlimited edition. But I can’t remember when I last made a drawing for myself (laughs).

What are your next steps you want to make in order to become a car designer?

I want to apply with automotive brands, I’m currently looking for an internship as a designer or visualizer at a car company in 2019. Preferably located in the UK but I wouldn’t mind travelling to Germany or elsewhere.

Did you already receive assignments from Car manufacturers?

Yes indeed, I was contacted by the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. And I was allowed in their ‘holy grail’, their museum of classic Porsche racers. My commission was to produce an oil painting from the historic 917 racer for the 70 years anniversary of Porsche. My work was also published in the 911 Magazine.

What is the creative process like?

I use specific marker paper which is bleed proof. As my markers use lots of ink which is heavy, the bleed proof is important for a perfect result. Additionally, I use color pencils and fine liners to finish off all details. It’s a mixture of techniques and materials. If my client desires an artier look, I use oil or water paint.

And how time consuming is your work?

Because I don’t use a computer and do all the drawing by hand, the making of one sketch takes around 20 hours to complete, you can watch the full process in my making of videos:
