STEVE BROWN – THE SIM RACER TURNED RADICAL DRIVER

15.12.2022

Steve Brown runs a successful YouTube channel where he shares his virtual racing exploits with his fans. But recently, he turned his skills in the virtual world into a real-life challenge when he hopped behind the wheel of a Radical SR1 at Donington Park race track in the UK. He loved it so much, he’s intending to do even more racing next year. We gave him a call to find out more.

STEVE BROWN – THE SIM RACER TURNED RADICAL DRIVER

Do you plan to keep racing in 2023?

The Radical race I did in September was the first I’d done in those cars. I raced the MX-5s in March, and the Fun Cup with Beetles in April. Each of those were my first goes at motor racing. I’m hoping to race again next year. We are looking to do a season of Radicals, and it would be amazing to make that happen because it’s difficult to just jump in the car for the occasional race and learn it quickly. Especially when you’re racing against people who have more experience with the car and the tracks. We’re also speaking to some other sponsors to do some racing abroad as well.

What similarities and differences are there between racing on a screen versus real life?

There definitely are similarities, but the pure feeling of it is different. In reality, you have the thrill of the speed, the bumpiness and shakiness, and a lack of visibility. And you can’t just restart the race after a crash. There’s also the pressure to not crash the car and damage yourself or the car. But there are overlaps, too. I train on the sim to practice concentration, how to handle the pressure of other cars around, and finding the right rhythm and routine that you can carry over into real life.

Motul is a partner of Radical. What kind of awareness have you had of Motul in motorsport, whether virtually or real?

In Gran Turismo Motul sponsors the Nissan GT-R in Super GT from Japan, and so when I take part in these races, I choose this car a lot. I love the distinctive livery.
